What Should I do To Prevent Animals From Being Attracted To My Property?

Problem animals are usually the result of chronic feeding by humans.  Wild animals accustomed to being fed will generally loose their natural fear of humans and seek to move closer to their food source--your house.  Once animals take up residence in your attic or outbuildings they can become very destructive and difficult to remove.

You should avoid leaving any pet food or garbage outside in an unsealed container. Even most sealed containers can be tipped and pried open by a hungry animal. If you keep these food or garbage in your garage or out building, you should keep the doors shut when you are not around.

Compost piles should be kept as far away from the house or buildings as possible. Also excess bird/squirrel food and scraps are a common attraction for a wide variety of animals. Remember: All animals are opportunists. They will look for the easiest meal possible.

What Can I Do To Animal Proof My House?

The most common entry ways are attic vents and chimneys. Be sure to properly cap all chimney flutes, not just the active ones. All attic vents can be animal proofed by installing hardware cloth to the wood behind the vent. The screen that comes with the vent, is only window screen and does very little to prevent access.

There is one thing to always remember: Make it as hard as possible for the animal to get into our house. While both squirrels and raccoons can climb brick and gutters, they can be deterred by simply removing any tree branches or tall shrubs that lead to your roof. These trees and shrubs are highways for animals. They should be cut far enough back to prevent an animal from easily stepping or climbing onto the roof or vent.

Wire Exclusion:

Decks and out buildings can be animal proofed by digging a 1 foot deep by 1 foot wide trench around the edge. You then use hardware cloth from the outside bottom edge of the building/deck to the bottom of the trench forming an "L" This will prevent animals from digging under the wire. For an extra bonus you can also hide the wire mesh with diamond shaped lattice. Note: Chicken wire is not a good choice, since it is not very durable and the holes are too big for 100% prevention.

We can also install lattice to hide the wire and add prevention.
